Choosing a House Plant

January 21st, 2009
by Kent Higgins

Although many plants can adapt equally well to indoor or outdoor conditions, some will flourish in the protected environment inside your home, while others enjoy the elements outdoors. If you enjoy gardening, be sure to understand your plant’s requirements when choosing a new plant for either your home or garden.

Herbs are one of the most adaptable types of plants available. As long as they have enough drainage and light, they will thrive indoors or out. However, if you are looking specifically for plants to keep indoors, there are many other plants that are well suited to this.

Bay Laurel, a plant native to the Mediterranean, grows well even in poor soil conditions as long as it receives plenty of light. You don’t need to water frequently or fertilize excessively; in fact, it is quite possible to overwater or add too much fertilizer. Go easy when caring for a plant like Bay Laurel.

Parsley is an excellent herb to plant indoors. It will do better indoors than when exposed to the elements outdoors. It loves sun, as do most herbs, so place your planter of parsley near a window where it will receive lots of sunlight.

Unlike many herbs, most bonsai plants prefer to be outdoors. However, there are several species that will adapt well to indoor conditions. In some climates, you cannot grow bonsai outdoors, and they will actually do better indoors. For example, tropical bonsai will do well outside if you live in a warm climate. But if it dips below 50 degrees for more than a day, you’re better off keeping your tropical bonsai plants indoors. When you keep plants indoors, you can control the conditions.

You may think that you need to simulate tropical conditions for these plants, making yourself uncomfortable. However, all you need to do is make the area near the plants hot and humid. Regularly spray your plants with water. However, keep them out of direct sunlight, as it can even overwhelm plants that thrive in heat and sunlight.

To keep houseplants, such as the peace lilly plant healthy, consider purchasing supplemental lights or heat lamps to simulate the conditions under which they thrive. Purchase a kit to monitor the plant soil conditions. Above all, make sure that the plants you choose are well suited to indoor conditions to begin with. When you choose a plant that will only thrive indoors and try to force it to flourish inside your home, you will only end up frustrated at its poor growth.

by Dave Truman

A homes appearance can be greatly improved when accented by a beautiful and well maintained garden, and fine gardening certainly deserves to be recognized as a wonderful hobby in and of itself. Gardeners will need to be extremely skilled and experienced when it comes to generalized gardening, however, before they can try to take on the difficult yet rewarding challenge that is fine gardening.

A good understanding of the various soil types is absolutely vital for a gardener before they can decide on taking up fine gardening as a hobby. The ability to properly raise basic petunias is also quite essential. A skilled gardener should understand the differences in soil types and what plants require which kind of soil.

In order for a gardener to have success in the work they do, they cannot simply go about planting any flower in any soil and then expect it to grow properly. An experienced and skilled gardener needs to be able to identify the kind of soil that their garden contains and also be able to change it out for a different type if necessary so that the plants in their garden can grow well.

The gardener should also have a good understanding of the weather in their area. Plants that thrive in California might not do well in Arizona. The gardener should look carefully at the plants in the area. If possible, a gardener should try to talk to the people with the best examples of fine gardening.

Fine Gardening: Opportunity for Exotic Settings

Fine gardening usually requires special effort, but the results are special as well. The people who study the soils, climate and other conditions will be able to look at the most magnificent plants for inclusion in their garden. There are some beautiful plants that will take more knowledge, skill and work than other plants. When a gardener is ready for this responsibility, they will be on their way to one of the most beautiful gardens.

Despite the fact that orchids are world renowned for their exceptional beauty, very few gardens contain many orchids. A determined and experienced gardener will be able to care for orchids properly and thus fill their garden with these spectacular and exotic flowers.

Besides flowers, fine gardening can also produce delicious vegetables for an experienced gardener. Freshly grown garden vegetables are always tasty. Meals can be improved by lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots picked fresh from the garden. The rewards of fine vegetable gardening are not just aesthetic; they also improve health.

Solar Lighting In Your Yard

January 18th, 2009
by Kent Higgins

In the past ten years, gardening has grown to be a very popular hobby. More people than ever are beautifying their landscaping and gardens, by adding distinctive lighting, stepping blocks, fountains and other yard ornaments.

Solar lighting in your garden is a great way to highlight a path or water fountain, it adds something interesting to your yard. Solar garden lights require no power source and can be put anywhere, there is no wiring or electricity required.

Typical solar lights are enclosed in a plastic case with a solar cell, a single nickel and cadmium batter, control board, LED light and a devise that retains and stores solar energy and provides light.

A solar cell gets its fuel from the battery. Throughout the day, this battery gets charged by the sunshine. The control board then draws its power from the solar cell and the battery both. When it gets dark, the battery stops charging and the photoresistor is activated and turns on the light emitting diode (LED). When the battery is completely charged, it can operate for about fifteen hours.

The obvious reasons for using solar lighting is that there is no need for electrical outlets or wiring. Though solar lighting is a bit more expensive than an electric light, it does save you money when it comes to your energy bill.

Solar lights are available in many styles, colors and shapes. The most popular type of solar light is the simple plastic dome lights. These lights have spikes attached to the light, which makes it easier to stick them in the ground. The lights are shaped like a dome and used for pathway lighting or as a focal point for a floral boarder.

Solar lights are also available in tubes, discs, lanterns, torches, and globes. You can even hang some on a pole or mount it on the side of your house or deck.

Solar lights add charm and sophistication to any of your landscaping. Solar powered outdoor lighting can be used to decorate around your pool, to show off your garden or flowers, up and down your driveway or light up a path.

Solar lights in your garden is great for people who want to protect the environment, as well as for those who are concerned with saving money on their utility bill. Solar lights enhance your property and will last for a long time.

Relax And Let The Fountain Do The Job

January 17th, 2009
by Thomas Fryd

There are several things you can do to relieve stress during the course of the day. Yoga can be very relaxing, however, this is not always an option for someone trapped behind a desk. However, there are many other options for you to consider when trying to calm down and de-stress from your environment. A simple water fountain can work wonders, remember it is the small things that can work the best. It is not only good practice to learn ways to relax, it is good for your health as well. The benefits to being able to successfully relieve stress are well known in the medical world.

There are several different types and models of indoor water fountains available. You can look around at your local store to find one that appeals to you the most. You can find one in any shape, size or even in different colors. The smaller ones work ideally when your space is limited. While you can purchase a larger, more elaborate one for your home. Someone may even give you a fountain as a gift for your birthday or Christmas.

Most models sit well on a tabletop or desk, they are just as great as the larger ones. All you need to operate one is some water and an electrical outlet. If it spills water though, this means that it is not working properly. Your fountain should be stable and not leak.

It is also important to remember that the proper amount of water is maintained in your fountain, this is essential if your fountain is going to work properly. You need to check the levels frequently if you use your fountain on a regular basis. Even if you only use your fountain occasionally, you still need to make sure the water level is adequate. It is never a good idea to let your fountain run out of water, it may cause your fountain to be damaged.

If it a very hot day, the water even on small backyard and shaded areas may evaporate more quickly than you realize. If you allow it to run dry, it can cause your landscape fountain motor to be damaged or burn up. Fountains are relatively simple to maintain. It is also important to note that your fountain needs to be cleaned occasionally, by adding some vinegar to the water. In much the same way you clean your coffee maker, the vinegar will run through the fountain, clean the parts and then you simply replace it with fresh water.

Light Up Your Life With Outdoor Lighting

January 15th, 2009
by Kent Higgins

With the perfect lighting inside your house, it can greatly enhance its beauty. However, getting the wrong lighting can ruin the whole look and environment. You need to know what kind of lighting will best suit your home and garden area. If you dream of strolling through your garden in the nighttime with the perfect ambiance with the wind brushing against your cheek, the the perfect lighting is a must. You just have to know how to go about finding the right lighting for the look you want to achieve.

Lighting outdoors can also serve for the purpose of security. As the days get shorter in the winter season, outdoor lighting can brighten the outdoor area and make a dramatic change in your outdoor living area. With the right planning, you can also create the perfect lighting for outdoor entertaining.

Different Options for Outdoor Lighting

For categories of Outdoor Lighting:

Security Lighting: Lighting used for this purpose is to make darker areas lighter. Its good to keep it away from the living areas so it does not distract, some of the lights are very bright and motion activated. You can install a manual switch to turn them off and on, so you can override automatic lighting.

Task Lighting: Lighting of this kind is used for the purpose of outdoor entertaining. You can use it when grilling or walking on a path or up and down outdoor steps. This lighting should be aimed at your eyes and focus on the areas that need to be lighted. Make sure that it does not make a glare, because this can be blinding.

Accent Lights: You can use these lights to create a very dramatic effect or to highlight an object of interest. Uplighting can be used to light up a statue and silhouetting can be achieved by keeping the light between the statue and your fence or wall. Ambient or general lighting allows overall lighting so that people feel comfortable and look their best.

Moonlight or starlight: You can even imitate moonlight or starlight for a magical effect. Moonlight can be reproduced by putting your outdoor lighting up in the trees. The lights should be pointed down to create a dappling effect. This makes the area appear to be lit by a full moon. There is nothing more beautiful than natures gift-the stars in the night sky! You can even imitate this effect by hanging tiny lights throughout your tree branches to create a sparkling night light canopy. You can sprinkle them here and there throughout your area, it will look lovely.

Things to Remember:

No matter what type of look you are going for, there is such a thing as overdoing it. Less is more when it comes to situations involving lighting. Do not use solar garden lights where they are not needed. You can also be subtle by using a low wattage LED light bub. Be careful to not aim lights up, never use them in straight lines up and down paths, or it will look like an airport runway.

Also do not use any yellow-tinted bulbs, these are unflattering to everything and everyone. Use blue-white or daylight-blue filter bulbs for your lighting needs. The lights should be easily accessible when you need to change light bulbs. Once you are done setting up your lights, you should go outside at night and enjoy the beautiful scene.

Common Vegetable Garden Pests

January 14th, 2009
by Sarah Duke

Pesky insects and bugs are a problem for most vegetable gardeners. Most bugs aren’t particularly destructive, they’re just annoying. But if you find a garden pest devouring your harvest, you’re not going to be too happy.

Among the ugliest garden pests is the tomato hornworm. It is a fat, white and green worm with a big horn that resembles a stinger. It can be plucked from the plant using gloved hands and submerged in soapy water to kill it. Alternatively, you could spray the tomato hornworm with stomach poison insecticide, neem oil, or Bacillus thuringiensis.

Thrips overrun numerous plants and create uneven white markings on the plant’s leaves. To get rid of them, use a hose to wash off the bugs and then spray on some contact poison.

Snails and slugs will devour the leaves on your plants, and they always leave a slimy trail as evidence. You can buy bait to attract and kill them, but you can achieve the same thing with a shallow dish of beer; they’ll be drawn to it and drown.

Those plump white worms that you see in the ground are most likely grubs. When grubs attack your plants they start to droop and their growth will be stunted. They can be held in check by adding milky spore to the soil. Grubs eventually grow into beetles, which you can rid of with stomach poison insecticide.

Cutworms tend to attack a plant’s stem at the base. Putting a paper collar around the plants is really the only way to keep them away.

Corn earworms will infiltrate a cob of corn while it’s still on the stalk and consume the kernels. Similarly, the tomato fruitworm will chow down on the interior of eggplants, peppers and tomatoes. Try using an insecticide that specifically targets earworms.

Borers are found in many vine plants with thick stems. The only way to eliminate them is to cut them out of the plant. You might end up having to pull up the plant and destroying it if you find a borer near the base of the plant. You can usually get rid of them with insecticide.

Another annoying pest is the beetle, which likes to eat the leaves on your plants. You have to get rid of them because they can do a tremendous amount of damage to your garden. You can either spray them with insecticide or just pick them off the plants.

Aphids are a common sight in any vegetable garden. Usually you’ll spot them as a group of small bugs in a variety of colors. Insecticide soap or neem oil gets rid of aphids.

Flowering Cactus Plants

January 13th, 2009
by Thomas Fryd

Most people don’t think of flowers when they think of cactus plants, but many are great flowering plants that can ad some splash and pizazz to any home or garden. Even the showiest of orchids can be usurped by the beauty of a flowering cactus. The odd mix of harsh plant and beautiful flower really sets it off from other plants and makes for an intriguing look.

Obviously, with cacti, it’s important to be very careful when you handle them or smell their flowers. While the fragrance is sweet, the thorns aren’t. Be careful with them.

One of the most popular flowering cacti to grow is the crab cactus. It has bright flowers that give off a lot of color and young stems that are flat and resemble the claws of a crab (thus the name). As they get older, they become round and woody in their look, but keep their beautiful flowers with each bloom. Using equal parts sand, loam, leaf-mould and broken charcoal yields beautiful and healthy plants.

The orchid cactus is another favorite, having beautiful red flowers that bloom in the summer. The big flowers can be quite huge, up to six inches around. The colors are two shades of red: scarlet and carmine, giving a deep hue and strong look. The cactus itself will get to about three feet high, so it’s quite large compared to it’s smaller companions in many settings. The Easter or Spring cactus is another sight to behold, with symmetrical flowers that open very wide.

Cacti have another advantage over other plants too: they’re much easier to care for. Their nutritional and water needs are marginal and easily taken care of. The trick is to set them into the right conditions to start with, both soil and pot size, and then water occasionally and ad nitrogen once in a while. The soil should be dry most of the time between waterings, though an increase in watering during blooming season is a good idea. High light levels will induce faster and larger blooms as most cacti are happier with lots of sunlight. Just be sure not to overdo the sun or the buds will droop and will flower weakly or not at all.

Care of cactus plants to promote the right flowering is achieved when the timing is right and receive signals from their environment as to when this is. If you grow cacti as house plants, you’ll need to artificially give these signals in order to promote flowering in a faster and healthier way. A few short days with cooler temperature (less sunlight, lower temperature) followed by longer days with more moderate temperatures will trick the cactus into thinking it’s spring. Eventually, the plant will flower as the temperature rises.

In a greenhouse, it may be necessary to remove the cactus to the outdoors or into the home for cooler conditions to be had. A few even put their cacti into a refrigerator, though this is extreme.

Easy care and enjoyment are two of the best reasons to grow cactus plants and flowering cacti are both beautiful and unique.
